title: Inbox
description: Complete reference for capturing, organizing, promoting, and diagnosing Inbox items.
---

Inbox items are Markdown notes with IDs such as `INB-42`. Commands accept an item ID or resolvable Inbox path. For a registered workspace, SQLite allocates sequence numbers atomically across CLI processes and the desktop app.

## `inbox capture`

Capture text as a new item. Omit the text argument to read standard input. Repeat `--tag` to add several tags.

```text
octarine inbox capture [text] [--priority <priority>] [--tag <tag>]...
```

```bash
octarine inbox capture "Follow up on release" --priority high --tag project
printf 'Review the launch checklist' | octarine inbox capture --tag launch
```

```text
╭──────────┬───────────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                         │
╞══════════╪═══════════════════════════════╡
│ id       ┆ INB-42                        │
│ path     ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md     │
│ revision ┆ sha256:7c4a8d09…              │
│ status   ┆ open                          │
╰──────────┴───────────────────────────────╯
```

Priorities are `urgent`, `high`, `medium`, `low`, and `none`. The default is `none`.

## `inbox list`

List Inbox items and their state.

```bash
octarine inbox list
octarine inbox list --format jsonl
```

```text
# Default table output
╭────────┬───────────────────────────┬──────────────────┬────────╮
│ id     ┆ path                      ┆ revision         ┆ status │
╞════════╪═══════════════════════════╪══════════════════╪════════╡
│ INB-42 ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md ┆ sha256:7c4a8d09… ┆ open   │
╰────────┴───────────────────────────┴──────────────────┴────────╯
# JSONL output
{"id":"INB-42","path":".octarine/inbox/INB-42.md","status":"open","revision":"sha256:7c4a8d09…"}
```

## `inbox append-to-note`

Append an item's content to an existing note.

```bash
octarine inbox append-to-note INB-42 Projects/Launch.md
```

```text
╭──────────┬──────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                    │
╞══════════╪══════════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ # Launch\n\nFollow up… │
│ path     ┆ Projects/Launch.md       │
│ revision ┆ sha256:9be317c2…         │
╰──────────┴──────────────────────────╯
```

The Inbox item is marked done. `append-to-daily` and `promote` do the same.

## `inbox append-to-daily`

Append an item to today's Daily Desk note or an explicit date.

```bash
octarine inbox append-to-daily INB-42
octarine inbox append-to-daily INB-42 --date 2026-10-15
```

```text
╭──────────┬─────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value               │
╞══════════╪═════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ Follow up on release │
│ path     ┆ Daily/2026-10-15.md  │
│ revision ┆ sha256:2f6137aa…     │
╰──────────┴─────────────────────╯
```

## `inbox promote`

Promote an item to a destination note. With no destination, append it to today's Daily Desk note.

```bash
octarine inbox promote INB-42 Projects/Launch.md
octarine inbox promote INB-43
```

```text
╭──────────┬────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value              │
╞══════════╪════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ # Launch\n\nFollow… │
│ path     ┆ Projects/Launch.md │
│ revision ┆ sha256:9be317c2…   │
╰──────────┴────────────────────╯
```

Use `append-to-note` or `append-to-daily` when you want the destination to be explicit in scripts.

## `inbox snooze`

Hide an item until a date. Use an ISO date such as `2026-10-15` or a date-time such as `2026-10-15T09:00:00Z`; the desktop app ignores values it cannot parse as a date.

```bash
octarine inbox snooze INB-42 2026-10-15
```

```text
╭──────────┬───────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                     │
╞══════════╪═══════════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ ---\n…\nsnoozed_until: 2026-10-15\n---\n… │
│ path     ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md │
│ revision ┆ sha256:6ad11f08…          │
╰──────────┴───────────────────────────╯
```

## `inbox unsnooze`

Remove the snooze date and return the item to the active Inbox.

```bash
octarine inbox unsnooze INB-42
```

```text
╭──────────┬───────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                     │
╞══════════╪═══════════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ ---\ninbox_number: 42\n… │
│ path     ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md │
│ revision ┆ sha256:7c4a8d09…          │
╰──────────┴───────────────────────────╯
```

## `inbox status`

Set an item's workflow status.

```bash
octarine inbox status INB-42 done
octarine inbox status INB-42 in_progress
octarine inbox status INB-42 open
```

```text
╭──────────┬───────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                     │
╞══════════╪═══════════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ ---\ninbox_number: 42\n… │
│ path     ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md │
│ revision ┆ sha256:03ce28b4…          │
╰──────────┴───────────────────────────╯
```

Accepted states are `open`, `in_progress` (or `in-progress`), and `done`.

## `inbox priority`

Set an item's priority to `urgent`, `high`, `medium`, `low`, or `none`.

```bash
octarine inbox priority INB-42 high
octarine inbox priority INB-42 none
```

```text
╭──────────┬───────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                     │
╞══════════╪═══════════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ ---\n…\npriority: high\n… │
│ path     ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md │
│ revision ┆ sha256:d6020ef1…          │
╰──────────┴───────────────────────────╯
```

## `inbox tag add`

Add one tag if it is not already present.

```bash
octarine inbox tag INB-42 add project
```

```text
╭──────────┬───────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                     │
╞══════════╪═══════════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ ---\n…\ntags: [project]\n… │
│ path     ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md │
│ revision ┆ sha256:25b881c0…          │
╰──────────┴───────────────────────────╯
```

## `inbox tag remove`

Remove one tag.

```bash
octarine inbox tag INB-42 remove someday
```

```text
╭──────────┬───────────────────────────╮
│ Field    ┆ Value                     │
╞══════════╪═══════════════════════════╡
│ content  ┆ ---\n…\ntags: [project]\n… │
│ path     ┆ .octarine/inbox/INB-42.md │
│ revision ┆ sha256:25b881c0…          │
╰──────────┴───────────────────────────╯
```

## `inbox tag list`

List tags on one item.

```bash
octarine inbox tag INB-42 list
octarine inbox tag INB-42 list --json
```

```text
# Default table output
╭─────────╮
│ Value   │
╞═════════╡
│ project │
│ launch  │
╰─────────╯
# JSON output
{"schemaVersion":1,"ok":true,"data":["project","launch"],"meta":{"truncated":false}}
```

The item precedes the tag subcommand: `inbox tag <item> add|remove|list`.

## `inbox trash`

Move an Inbox item to the operating system trash.

```bash
octarine inbox trash INB-42
```

```text
╭─────────┬────────╮
│ Field   ┆ Value  │
╞═════════╪════════╡
│ trashed ┆ INB-42 │
╰─────────┴────────╯
```

## `inbox doctor`

Check Inbox IDs for duplicates and report sequence information.

```bash
octarine inbox doctor
octarine inbox doctor --json
```

```text
# Default table output
╭──────────────┬────────────────────────────╮
│ Field        ┆ Value                      │
╞══════════════╪════════════════════════════╡
│ duplicateIds ┆ []                         │
│ healthy      ┆ true                       │
│ items        ┆ 2                          │
│ sequencePath ┆ .octarine/inbox/sequence   │
╰──────────────┴────────────────────────────╯
# JSON output
{"schemaVersion":1,"ok":true,"data":{"duplicateIds":[],"healthy":true,"items":2,"sequencePath":".octarine/inbox/sequence"},"meta":{"truncated":false}}
```

This command diagnoses item consistency; it does not rewrite IDs.
