Read-only Notes

Disable editing for a specific note

Read-only notes prevent accidental edits to important content by making specific notes uneditable. This feature protects finalized documents, reference materials, or archived content from unintended modifications.

This is available only for Pro License users.

The Basics

When a note is made read-only, it becomes completely uneditable within Octarine. The editor displays the content but prevents any modifications, ensuring your important documents remain unchanged.

  • Visual indication: Read-only notes display a crossed pen icon in the file tree and editor
  • Content protection: All editing capabilities are disabled for read-only notes
  • Quick toggle: Editable states can be changed instantly
  • External editing: Files remain editable through external editors if needed

Locking Notes

Lock a note using these methods:

  • Context Menu: Right-click on a note in the file tree and select "Make note read-only"
  • Command Bar: With a note open, press Cmd/Ctrl + K and search for "Make note read-only"
  • Note Menu: Click the three-dot menu in the note editor and select "Make note read-only"

Once made read-only:

  • The note displays a crossed pen icon in the file tree
  • The editor becomes read-only with a visual indicator
  • All editing shortcuts and actions are disabled
  • Copy operations remain available

Making Notes editable again

To make a read-only note editable again:

  • Context Menu: Right-click the read-only note and select "Make note editable"
  • Command Bar: Press Cmd/Ctrl + K and search for "Make note editable"
  • More options: Use the options menu in the note’s breadcrumb to make the note editable.

The note immediately returns to its normal editable state with all editing features restored.
