Backup your workspace to Dropbox

Octarine works seamlessly with Dropbox, enabling you to sync your markdown notes across devices and platforms. By creating your workspace within a Dropbox folder, all your notes automatically sync through Dropbox's reliable infrastructure.

Setting Up Dropbox Sync

To use Octarine with Dropbox:

  1. Install Dropbox desktop app and sign in to your account
  2. Open Octarine and select "Create New Workspace" or "Open Existing Workspace"
  3. Navigate to your Dropbox folder in the file picker (typically under your home directory)
  4. Create or select a folder within Dropbox as your workspace location
  5. Open the workspace - Octarine now reads and writes directly to this Dropbox folder

Your notes will sync automatically across all devices with Dropbox installed.

How It Works

  • Local-first approach: Octarine works with the local Dropbox folder on your device
  • Background sync: Dropbox handles all synchronization in the background
  • Cross-platform: Access your notes on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android
  • Selective sync: Choose which workspace folders to sync on each device through Dropbox preferences

File Management

When using Dropbox with Octarine:

  • Real-time updates: File tree automatically reflects changes synced from other devices
  • Sync status: Dropbox shows sync indicators (checkmarks, syncing icons) in your file manager
  • Smart Sync: Keep files online-only to save space - they download automatically when opened in Octarine
  • File recovery: Access deleted files and previous versions through Dropbox's web interface

Collaboration Features

Dropbox enables team collaboration with Octarine:

  • Shared folders: Create workspaces in shared Dropbox folders for team access
  • Real-time sync: Team members see updates within seconds
  • Permissions: Control read/write access through Dropbox folder settings
  • Comments: Team members can add comments via Dropbox (viewable on web/mobile)

Troubleshooting Dropbox Sync

If synchronization issues occur:

  1. Check Dropbox status: Ensure the desktop app is running and signed in
  2. Verify sync status: Look for the green checkmark on your workspace folder
  3. Check storage quota: Confirm you have available Dropbox storage space
  4. Pause and resume: Try pausing and resuming sync in Dropbox preferences
  5. Refresh file tree: Click the refresh icon in Octarine's toolbar to rebuild the index
  6. Check selective sync: Ensure your workspace folder is selected for syncing
