Backup your workspace to iCloud

Octarine seamlessly integrates with iCloud Drive, allowing you to sync your markdown notes across all your Apple devices. Since Octarine stores notes as standard markdown files, you can create your workspace directly within iCloud Drive for automatic synchronization.

Setting Up iCloud Sync

To use Octarine with iCloud Drive:

  1. Open Octarine and choose "Create New Workspace" or "Open Existing Workspace"
  2. Navigate to iCloud Drive in the file picker (typically found under Locations in the sidebar)
  3. Create or select a folder within iCloud Drive as your workspace location
  4. Open the workspace - Octarine will now read and write all notes directly to this iCloud folder

Your workspace is now synced across all devices signed into the same Apple ID.

How It Works

  • Direct file access: Octarine reads and writes markdown files directly to your iCloud Drive folder
  • Automatic sync: Changes made in Octarine are immediately saved to iCloud and synced to other devices
  • Cross-device editing: Edit notes on your Mac, and they'll appear on your iPhone, iPad, or other Macs
  • Offline access: Notes are cached locally and sync when you reconnect to the internet

Handling Sync Conflicts

If you edit the same note on multiple devices while offline:

  • iCloud creates conflict copies with timestamps in the filename
  • Both versions appear in Octarine's file tree
  • Review and merge changes manually, then delete the conflict copy
  • The file tree will update automatically once resolved

Performance Considerations

  • Initial sync: Large workspaces may take time to fully sync when first opened
  • Real-time updates: Changes typically appear on other devices within seconds
  • Large attachments: Images and other media in your workspace folder sync based on iCloud's prioritization
  • Network dependency: Sync speed depends on your internet connection

Troubleshooting iCloud Sync

If notes aren't syncing properly:

  1. Check iCloud status: Ensure iCloud Drive is enabled in System Settings
  2. Verify storage: Confirm you have sufficient iCloud storage available
  3. Force sync: In Finder, right-click the workspace folder and select "Download Now"
  4. Refresh file tree: Use the refresh icon in Octarine's file tree toolbar to rebuild the index
  5. Check connectivity: Ensure your device is connected to the internet
